The Angevine Middle School CAP class was busy this spring – busy learning about pollinators. At first the students weren’t exactly sure how to help pollinators. One group of boys just wanted to “free the bees!” Needless to say, some learning was in order.
First the students learned about all different types of pollinators: flies, butterflies and moths, bats, and bees. They researched what pollinates their favorite foods. Did you know that flies pollinate chocolate? Then they found out what, if anything, was threatening the pollinators. They decided that they were most interested in taking action to protect bees. They learned about colony collapse and about the role neonicotinoids are playing in the demise of the bees. Neonicotinoids can even be present in plants we plant intending to help bees! We had a beekeeper come in with a hive full of bee and she gave us lots of ideas about how to help them. She also let them know that her bees are usually free to come and go as they please, they like living in her hives, so they don’t actually need to be freed.
Boosted along by the visions of one of the students who is passionate about gardening, they planned and planted a pollinator garden in front of the school. Students also made seed bombs: mudballs with native wildflower seeds in them to throw in barren areas. They researched all of the local nurseries to find out which ones pledge to have pollinator safe plants and seeds, then they wrote the local newspapers and asked them to publish that list along with facts about pesticide use. They also wrote the City of Lafayette asking the government to remain pollinator friendly. I’d say the Angevine CAP class had a really sweet project!
