Students Discovered Joy in Simple Adventures, Creative Campsites, and Unforgettable Moments Together at Camp Patiya.
Written by CI Field Instructor Hailey Schmidt. In late April, Angevine Middle School CAP class embarked on an adventurous and joy-filled overnight trip to Camp Patiya outside of Boulder. We started our day by fishing at Lake Waneka and caught a total of one fish. Here, students also started whittling, which became a theme throughout our trip. After enjoying our morning, we ate a delicious lunch and headed to the hills.
Up at Camp Patiya, students set up tents. They took a lot of pride in their builds- one even included a fenced-in back yard! Then, students enjoyed their freedom by romping around in the field. They climbed up a large hill and admired the view from the top. “I’m on top of the woooooorld!” one student exclaimed. It was a very joyful afternoon with students guiding their own experience and engaging with their surroundings.

In the evening, we made a delicious mac n cheese dinner and enjoyed a campfire. Students roasted marshmallows with their freshly-whittled sticks. Then, we played some night games including sardines and flashlight tag. It was a very fun evening with lots of giggles.

A big thanks to the funders and supporters that make the CAP class possible, including: Enterprise Holdings Foundation, Great Outdoors Colorado, Patagonia, PeyBack Foundation, Strear Family Foundation, Thorne Nature Experience, Tony Grampsas Youth Services Program and the Xcel Energy Foundation.
