Angevine Field Day at Staunton: On Target for a Great Semester!

On Friday, September 5, Ms. Grillo’s middle school CAP class hit the road for a full day at Staunton State Park. The goal: strengthen friendships, build outdoor confidence, and—most importantly—have fun.

The morning at Angevine started with preparation and lively car games. On the hour drive to Staunton, one car group discovered 141 things they shared in common during a game of “Commonalities.” Laughter filled the van as the students rolled into Staunton, ready for the first activity: archery with park volunteers.

Students split into two large groups, rotating between archery and team games, giving archers plenty of one-on-one coaching. The game group started with an energetic round of Jedi Juice, which required teamwork and strategy to “steal the juice from the Jedi.” Competitive play, quick thinking, and lots of cheering set the tone. Next came Big Booty, a rhythmic, fast-paced chanting game that had everyone laughing. “Big Booty” chants echoed across the park long after the game ended.

Meanwhile, archery proved a big hit! The fantastic volunteers at Staunton guided students through the basics, making the challenge approachable even for first-timers. Many quickly hit their targets and eagerly tried longer ranges—some as far as 60 feet away.

After a morning of activity, the class regrouped for a lunch outside. Sandwiches fueled them for a new challenge: “Camouflage.” Instructor Erin introduced the “fox walk” to help students move silently across pine needles and sticks. Like the deer spotted before the game, the students blended impressively into their surroundings.

By the end of the day, smiles and giggles filled the bus ride back to school. Students felt closer to nature, bonded with classmates, and proud of stepping outside their comfort zones. During a final reflection circle, they shared gratitude for their time at Staunton State Park. We’re so excited for what’s to come for this awesome group of Angevine students!
