From Learning the 10 Essentials to Fishing and Unforgettable Games, DMLK Middle School Students Built Skills and Confidence During their Outdoor Adventure

Written by CI Field Instructor Blaise Miles. On our recent camping trip with DMLK Middle School, students had the chance to build outdoor skills, challenge themselves, and make memories surrounded by mountain views and fresh air during their three days of outdoor adventure.

We kicked off the trip with a day trip to Barr Lake State Park. Once we arrived, students jumped right into learning the basics of camping. One of the highlights of the day was our introduction to the 10 Essentials. Students showed off their modeling skills as they presented the gear and supplies needed for a safe and successful camping trip. We also practiced setting up tents, giving everyone a chance to build confidence with one of the most important outdoor living skills.

Day 2 brought high energy and a lot of laughs as we settled into our beautiful campsite, tucked away in the mountains with an incredible view. The main event was a World Cup-level game of capture the flag through the woods and across the hills. The students gave it everything they had, and while they had a blast, the adults were reminded that we maybe no longer have what it takes to sprint around like that.
Later in the day, students slowed things down by making paracord bracelets, a Cottonwood classic. For dinner, we roasted hot dogs over the fire.

That night, we played Sardines, which turned into another trip highlight. As the evening went on, the weather gave us an extra lesson when a windstorm rolled through camp. The students handled it incredibly well and stayed strong through the night. It was a real reminder that the outdoors can be unpredictable, and that preparation matters. We all came away with a better understanding of why careful tent setup – and being ready for anything – is so important.

Students learned how to cast, use bait, and practice patience while fishing – all while building a deeper respect for nature and the ecosystems around them. They had a great time trying out new skills, and the group caught three fish.

After a wonderful day by the water, we returned to camp for a relaxed evening together. Dinner was a student-made feast featuring what may have been the world’s best mac and cheese. We also made s’mores, and for a couple of students, it was their very first time. They quickly discovered that roasting the perfect golden marshmallow is both an art and, apparently, a competition. We ended the evening with a touching reflection where students were able to both connect to and appreciate each other, bringing meaning and lots of love to our trip.

On our last day, we packed up camp and headed home tired, proud, and full of stories.
