Journal for Friday, Sept. 1st

We talked a fair amount about where the products in our lives come
from; that is, where our water, clothes, food and ipods originated.  By
exploring the origins of these objects that surround us everyday, we
began to see that our Boulder community is connected to places as far
away as Bangladesh and Uzbekistan.  Given our brief exploration of this
topic, I’d like you to answer the following question:

Are we living in a sustainable community?

In
order to answer this fully, I’d like you to provide a definition of
what you think ‘sustainability’ is and then highlight in what ways
Boulder does, or does not, fit your definition.  Try to come up with a
definition that is your own and not a result of referencing Wikepedia,
Webster, etc.  I’m not looking for the correct answer, I’m looking for
your answer.

Thanks

i think sustainable means that something can be supported on its own. i think boulder could be sustainable if it had to be because we have farms here and water. we would probably need some way to get clothes or use deer skins. Boulder could also provide materials for tools like wood, rock and yuca for string. If Boulder was cut off from other resources i think it would definetly be able to be sustainable.

This will be my second post attempt and if this computer messes it up one more time im done with it. I should only have to do things once, but the burden of technology is weighing me down. it is a fact that vhs works better than dvd’s, because tapes cannot be scratched.
A sustainable community is a community that can create all it’s own goods. Boulder does not and will not do this.

A sustainable community produces everything itself. Boulder doesn’t-and couldn’t-do this. My answer is no, Boulder could not sustain itself the way it is now. If we were cut off from the rest of the world, I think we could definitely survive, but we wouldn’t be able to live the same way. I mean, we don’t have the resources to manufacture synthetic goods or most commercial products. We’d end up hunting and wearing leather loincloths. Which would be pretty sweet.

For me sustainable means to give energy and strenght to keep something going and support it. In my opinion i believe that boulder could be sustainable because we have lot’s of technology here and that could form a generation today and later in the future.Boulder could also provide more materials for outdoor use.Boulder would definetly be sustainable.

Sustainable is anything that can last through ups and downs. To be sustainable is to withstand enough force to survive. Boulder is sustainable because we can withstand almost anything. Nature, if its cold we can withstand that. If its hot we can withstand that. If we were to lose most of our main possesions we would withstand it. We support one another no matter the task. I beleive Boulder is unique, I beleive we could withstand more than most communities could.
