What is the saying: even a bad day of fishing beats a good day of work? Well, we had a great day of fishing, which surely beats just about anything. At the beginning of the semester the students of the Centaurus High School class were given a survey asking what outdoor activities they wanted to try and fishing was at the top of the list. So the folks at Cottonwood Institute got together with April from SaraBella Fishing and Dr. Mike Ross and made it happen – all within walking distance of the school.
We loaded up our supplies and walked to Waneka Lake. Even though it is right in their community, some of the students didn’t know about the park and that it was a free place for them to enjoy. Our class comes from many different countries and not all of them were lucky enough to have free public parks.
The students learned to fly fish, relaxed over lunch, played on the playground (you’re never too old for swings!) and did citizen science water testing.
When the students were asked what the best part of the trip, Danna said, “Lo mas divertido fue el estar conviviendo con mis compañeros y poder estar conviviendo con ellos y el estar tratando de pescar y el no poder y el poder estar platicando con personas las cuales no hablan español y el enseñando.” English translation: The most fun was being able to be around my friends and being able to hang out with them and trying to fish and not being able to and trying to have a conversation with people that don’t speak Spanish and teaching them.
¿Cómo dice el refrán: incluso un mal día de pesca es mejor que un buen día de trabajo? Pues bien, nosotros hemos tenido un gran día de pesca, que seguramente supera cualquier cosa. Al principio del semestre, los alumnos de la clase de Centaurus High School recibieron una encuesta en la que se les preguntaba qué actividades al aire libre querían probar, y la pesca ocupaba el primer lugar de la lista. Así que el equipo del Cottonwood Institute se reunió con April, de SaraBella Fishing, y con el Dr. Mike Ross y lo hicieron posible–todo lo suficientemente cerca de la escuela para ir caminando–.
Cargamos nuestras provisiones y caminamos hasta el Lago Waneka. A pesar de que se encuentra en su comunidad, algunos de los estudiantes no conocían el parque y no sabían que es un lugar gratuito para disfrutar. Los miembros de nuestra clase vienen de muchos países diferentes y no todos tienen la suerte de tener parques públicos gratuitos.
Los alumnos aprendieron a pescar con mosca, se relajaron durante el almuerzo, jugaron en el patio de recreo (¡nunca se es demasiado mayor para los columpios!) e hicieron pruebas científicas del agua.
Cuando les preguntamos a los estudiantes cuál era la mejor parte del viaje, Danna dijo, “Lo más divertido fue el estar conviviendo con mis compañeros y poder estar conviviendo con ellos y el estar tratando de pescar y el no poder y el poder estar platicando con personas las cuales no hablan español y el enseñando.”
