A Day of Service, Gratitude, and Community Rooted in Social Justice and Collective Action
Written by Erin Angel, CI Senior Instructor, Changemakers & Alumni Coordinator. On Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, Cottonwood alumni, Changemakers, and family members came together to turn inspiration into action. Nine of us gathered at Denver’s City Park to listen to powerful, moving speeches and vibe off the energy of a community committed to social justice. We painted signs with messages of social justice and equity, and even brought extra art supplies so others could join in. It was inspiring and really meaningful.
From there, we stepped into a service role along the Marade route (that’s a March + Parade!). Our group helped guide marchers safely around hazards and navigate changes in the route, making sure everyone could focus on why they were there. Along the way, we were surrounded by an incredible mix of community groups, families, and organizations all showing up for social justice together.
One of the most memorable parts of the day? The gratitude. Over and over, marchers thanked our students and families for volunteering. Those simple moments of connection reminded us how much small acts of service matter.
This day captured the heart of Cottonwood: learning, leadership, and community—across generations. We’re so proud of our students, alumni, and families for showing up with care and commitment, and we’re already inspired to volunteer again next year.
A sincere thank you to everyone who attended the 2025 Base Camp Bash event, which helped raise the critical funding for our Alumni Engagement programs.
If you are also passionate about getting students outside for unique service-learning experiences, please consider making a donation or becoming a monthly donor! You’ll help invest in our students, programs, and long-term sustainability and success!
