The third and final trimester group of the 2021-2022 school year at AXL Academy had their first overnight in the middle of April! The group of seventh graders explored Camp Patiya in the mountains outside of Boulder. After following the winding road all the way up Flagstaff, the group was certain we were headed into a new dimension. Shortly after arriving, we were greeted by a family of ~8 deer that we later would learn would hangout near us for the majority of our time.
The first order of business was arguably the most important- the rock, paper, scissors tournament to determine who would receive the first s’more of the night. It was an exciting moment- and the winner would be looking forward to their treat all day. Following the tournament, the group set-up camp- reviewing the 5 W’s of shelter building to ensure that they would put themselves in a proper camping spot. Several groups persevere and overcame challenges of setting up their tents including a few tents that were inside out, a broken zipper, and setting up a 4-person tent with only 1 human.
It was important that the group felt comfortable with the area they would be camping in, so the group discussed hazards, cooking areas, and bathrooms….bathrooms. Hmmm, the group had an outhouse, but they had never learned about catholes which left a great opportunity. Using rubber scat, the group participated in a cathole relay where they needed to work together to dig a cathole. After the cathole was dug, each relay team member needed to use their rubber scat to hop over to the cathole and deliver it. Asking middle school students to drop rubber scat into a hole was truly amusing.
As we were pretending to drop rubber animal scat into catholes, there was plenty of REAL animal scat around the area. The students had just completed lessons around tracking animals and were familiar with the shapes of scat they were seeing. The group noted that they may have even been looking at deer scat from the deer we saw upon our arrival. Students thought about different signs they might be able to see including bones, feathers, fur, sounds, or tracks. We ventured on the path around Camp Patiya to try and find some more signs. This exploration inevitably turned into several rounds of Camouflage with great success. Many of the students realized they could not camouflage very well when wearing bright colors or patterns- this turned into them noting how it would be difficult to camouflage as an animal in the wild.
After exploring Camp Patiya, it was time for wilderness skills. Students learned whittling and worked as a team to gather logs, sticks, grasses, and materials to create a debris shelter large enough to fit a human. In the end, the group decided that they did not have the energy to create a large enough shelter. We realized as a group that if we were creating a debris shelter well constructed enough for us to sleep in it- we would have to be well energized and have a lot of motivation and background knowledge.
The evening consisted of Gaga Ball, cards, football, and dinner. The cooking crew was the entire class and they did a great job of working together to create a successful ramen dinner. Some students cooked noodles, others cooked peppers, some sauteed ingredients, and others made sauces varying from spicy to mild. The ramen warmed everyone up as the sun went down and we built a fire. After eating a few S’mores and debriefing the day, many students elected to play a few rounds of sardines in the dark- a big challenge! Everyone went to bed tired after a long, fun, exciting day.
The morning included several locations including games at Camp Patiya, a hike to Gross reservoir that ended in bad weather, and a pivot hike to Chautauqua Park in Boulder where we were greeted with sun and little wind. The group is already looking forward to their next overnight where they explore a new place and new skills. See you on the next trip, AXL Academy!
¡El grupo del tercer y último trimestre del año escolar 2021-2022 en la Academia AXL tuvo su primer viaje con quedada a dormir a mediados de abril! El grupo de séptimo grado exploró el Campamento Patiya en las montañas de las afueras de Boulder. Después de seguir la carretera sinuosa hasta Flagstaff, el grupo estaba seguro de que nos dirigíamos a una nueva dimensión. Poco después de llegar, fuimos recibidos por una familia de unos 8 ciervos que, según supimos más tarde, pasarían cerca de nosotros la mayor parte del tiempo.
El primer punto del orden del día fue sin duda el más importante: el torneo de piedra, papel o tijera para determinar quién recibiría el primer s’more de la noche. Fue un momento emocionante y el ganador esperaría su premio todo el día. Tras el torneo, el grupo montó el campamento, repasando las 5 W de la construcción de refugios para asegurarse de que se situaban en un lugar de acampada adecuado. Varios grupos perseveraron y superaron los retos de montar sus tiendas, incluyendo algunas tiendas que estaban al revés, una cremallera rota, y montar una tienda de 4 personas con sólo un humano.
Era importante que el grupo se sintiera cómodo con la zona en la que iban a acampar, por lo que el grupo habló de los peligros, las zonas de cocina y los baños… baños. Hmmm, el grupo tenía un retrete afuera, pero nunca habían aprendido sobre las cisternas, lo que suponía una gran oportunidad. Con la ayuda de la goma, el grupo participó en un relevo de catetos en el que tenían que trabajar juntos para cavar un cateto. Una vez cavada la cisterna, cada miembro del equipo de relevo tenía que usar su goma para saltar a la cisterna y entregarla. Pedir a los alumnos de secundaria que dejen caer la goma en un agujero fue realmente divertido.
Mientras simulábamos dejar caer excrementos de animales de goma en los agujeros, había muchos excrementos de animales REALES en la zona. Los alumnos acababan de terminar las clases de rastreo de animales y estaban familiarizados con las formas de los excrementos que veían. El grupo señaló que incluso podrían haber estado viendo excrementos de ciervos que vimos a nuestra llegada. Los alumnos pensaron en diferentes señales que podrían ver, como huesos, plumas, pelaje, sonidos o huellas. Nos aventuramos por el sendero que rodea el campamento Patiya para intentar encontrar más señales. Esta exploración se convirtió inevitablemente en varias rondas del juego Camouflage con gran éxito. Muchos de los alumnos se dieron cuenta de que no podían camuflarse muy bien cuando llevaban colores o dibujos brillantes, lo que les llevó a señalar lo difícil que sería camuflarse como un animal en la naturaleza.
Después de explorar el Campamento Patiya, llegó el momento de las habilidades en la naturaleza. Los alumnos aprendieron a tallar y trabajaron en equipo para reunir troncos, palos, hierbas y materiales para crear un refugio de escombros lo suficientemente grande para un ser humano. Al final, el grupo decidió que no tenía la energía necesaria para crear un refugio lo suficientemente grande. Nos dimos cuenta, como grupo, de que si íbamos a crear un refugio de escombros lo suficientemente bien construido como para que pudiéramos dormir en él, tendríamos que estar bien energizados y tener mucha motivación y conocimientos previos.
La velada consistió de Gaga Ball, cartas, fútbol y cena. El equipo de cocina fue toda la clase e hicieron un gran trabajo de colaboración para crear una exitosa cena de ramen. Algunos estudiantes cocinaron fideos, otros cocinaron pimientos, algunos saltearon ingredientes y otros hicieron salsas que variaban de picantes a suaves. El ramen calentó a todos mientras el sol se ponía y hacíamos una hoguera. Después de comer unos cuantos S’mores y de analizar el día, muchos estudiantes decidieron jugar unas rondas de sardinas en la oscuridad, ¡un gran desafío! Todos se fueron a la cama cansados después de un largo, divertido y emocionante día.
La mañana incluyó varios lugares, entre ellos juegos en el Campamento Patiya, una excursión al embalse de Gross que terminó con mal tiempo, y una excursión a Chautauqua Park en Boulder, donde nos recibió el sol y poco viento. El grupo ya está deseando que llegue su próximo viaje, en el cual explorarán un nuevo lugar y nuevas habilidades. ¡Hasta la próxima, Academia AXL!
