This weeks journal entry is a chance for students to reflect on how the Action Project is going so far. In general, how do you think our action project is going so far? Specifically, what is going well in terms of positive actions, behaviors, successes. etc. that you have observed? Also what is not going well? What changes in your actions or in your behaviors can you make to help improve your experience and to be more efficient in organizing our project in the next few weeks? Please feel free to comment on todays trip to the Growing Gardens, specifically what you learned from our guest speaker. A comment or two on what you feel are the limitations and realistic goals for this project would also help the project managers organize the rest of our project.

“Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. We have seen the future, and the future is ours.” - Cesar Chavez

After completing our first overnight camping experience, I encourage you to discuss what you liked and disliked about the weekend. I recommend that you refer to the Finer Points of Expedition Behavior handout and comment on both the positive and negative behaviors that you observed throughout the weekend (no names please). The weekend experience was also an introduction to minimum impact camping, so please describe what low impact methods were successful and what you feel we need to improve upon during our next overnight. Finally, what will you take away from this experience and what will you do differently next time? Remember you must respond before class on Thursday, September 13 and write at least 2 to 3 paragraphs to recieve full credit.

“The longer I live the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break an organization…a school…a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have. And that is our attitude…I am convinced life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you…” –Charles Swindoll

After completing your second week of CAP you have had many opportunities to explore environmental issues surrounding our community. I would like you to discuss two or three issues that you are most passionate about, and how the issues could be addressed in our class through an action project. Remember that our class may choose to either expand upon a previous CAP action project or develop a project on a topic that is new to CAP at New Vista. If you would like to continue work on a previous project please discuss what our class would do in addition to what has been developed by former classes. Another factor to consider as you discuss potential action projects is the time of year that we will be completing our project. For example: if you choose a wildlife issue, what issues are most prevalent in our community during the months of September and October. We will be selecting an action project this week based on your journal responses, so please take the time to really consider what topics are of greatest interest to you and be able to explain why our class should choose one of these issues. All journal entries must be posted by the start of class on Tuesday, September 4 to receive full credit!
