"Always in the big woods when you leave familiar ground and step off alone into a new place there will be, along with the feelings of curiosity and excitement, a little nagging of dread. It is the ancient fear of the Unknown, and it is your first bond with the wilderness you are going into. What you are doing is exploring. You are undertaking the first experience, not of the place, but of yourself in that place. It is an experience of our essential loneliness; for nobody can discover the world for anybody else. It is only after we have discovered it for ourselves that it becomes a common ground and a common bond, that we cease to be alone."
-Wendell Berry

Hey folks,
As you may know, Ford Church with the Cottonwood Institute has enlisted me to teach the CAP program this year. I’m extremely excited to be involved with a program that has a great track record and a very bright future and I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself. In my spare time, I teach this class with
which is where I completed my student teaching requirements for the CU School of Education teacher licensure
program in 2004. In addition to my
teaching license, I have a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Colorado. I’ve been a lead instructor for outdoor
education and wilderness expedition programs for over three years and I also am
a rock climbing instructor/guide at The Spot Climbing School. I have a Wilderness First Responder medical
certification and have been fortunate enough to gather over ten years of
personal and professional experience in rock and ice climbing, mountaineering,
telemark and alpine skiing, and backcountry trekking. I’ve worked and volunteered for such
organizations as The Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning, The American
Alpine Club, The Access Fund, Wilderness Ventures and The Boulder County Youth
Corps.
Thanks for completing the CAP Pre-Course Survey and it’s great to have all of you in class!
Matt
