“The longer I live the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break an organization

Laura Nilo, Traveling Trainer/Education Programs Coordinator from Leave No Trace (LNT), visited the Community Adventure Program today at Bear Creek Park to engage students with LNT environmental ethics activities. As we embark on our Community Adventures it is essential that we understand how to minimize our impact while exploring the outdoors. The CAP wants to thank and acknowledge Laura for taking time out of her busy day to impart some of her LNT wisdom with us

“All ethics so far evolved rest upon a single premise: that the individual is a member of a community of interdependent parts. His instincts prompt him to compete for his place in the community, but his ethics prompt him also to cooperate…The land ethic simply enlarges the boundaries of the community to include soils, waters, plants, animals, or collectively: the land…In short, a land ethic changes the role of Homo Sapiens from conqueror of the land to plain member and citizen of it. It implies respect for his fellow-members, and also a respect for the community as such.” -Aldo Leopold

“One final paragraph of advice: Do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am - a reluctant enthusiast…a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it is still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much: I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk bound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this: you will outlive the bastards.” - Edward Abbey

Welcome to the Community Adventure Program!

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the new students who are about to embark on the maiden voyage of the Community Adventure Program (CAP). This program represents the realization of a project I have developed through the Master of Arts Program (MAP) at Prescott College. I am fortunate to be a part of the New Vista High School community and I am excited for the incredible learning opportunity that lies ahead for all of us.

Mark Twain once said, “twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Everyone participating in the CAP, from students to parents to community members, are about to set sail to explore, dream, and discover together. This Blog will be used to document our experience with the Community Adventure Program. I wholeheartedly encourage everyone who visits this site to take advantage of this technology by using the comment feature below to share their words of wisdom, inspiration, and encouragement to all of the students about to embark on this incredible journey.

I would like to send out a special thanks to my family for all of their love and support, to my friend Mikal Belicove for educating me about the world of Blogging, to my cousin Byrne Reese for all of his hard work in breathing life into this Blog, and to my MAP advisor and mentor Rick Medrick for all of his feedback and encouragement.
