"The packaging for a microwavable ‘microwave’ dinner is programmed for a shelf life of maybe six months, a cook time of two minutes and a landfill dead-time of centuries."

For this journal discussion I’d like you to think about what you are learning from our Action Project.  We’ve spent the last week working hard on researching the New Zealand Mud Snail issue, contacting expert members of the community, locating and ordering products for our educational campaign, and collaborating with one another in order to complete the many tasks necessary to make this project fly.

We’re still in the midst of this project and a lot of work remains unfinished, nonetheless, I’d like you to take a few minutes and think, just think, about what it takes to be active in the community.  What have you learned about putting together a campaign to raise awareness for an issue?  What is important and what is not?  What is difficult and what is easy?  What can we do to keep up all the great momentum that we’ve generated from this week of hard work?  Your response should reflect that you have thought about these questions and should be, as always, edited for grammar, spelling and punctuation.  Thanks.

"It’s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the
strong man stumbled or where the doer of great deeds could have done
them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the
arena. Whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood. Who strives
valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again. And who, while
daring greatly, spends himself in a worthy cause so that his place may
not be among those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor
defeat." – Theodore Roosevelt

"Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong.  There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right.  To map out a course of action and to follow it to an end requires courage."

I’d like you to take a moment and reflect on what we’ve learned so far this quarter.  A major component of the experiencial learning model is the practice of setting aside time and analyzing our experiences in the field.

Please tell me about an experience you’ve had in this class that has stuck with you.  Why do you think this particular concept, lesson or experience has not been forgotten?  What made it different from other concepts, lessons or experiences?  How do you think you will apply what you’ve experienced/learned to future situations?  For example, if you’ve learned something about group dynamics, how will that knowledge change your words and actions when you are working with others in the future?  Your response should be edited for content, spelling, puctuation and grammar.

"Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed, you cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read.  You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore.  We have seen the future and the future is ours."

Before our first overnight, we decided that we wanted to both learn about and take action in regards to the problem of invasive, non-native species in Boulder County.  After some research, we learned that the New Zealand Mud Snail, an invasive aquatic species which has already disrupted ecosystems in major rivers throughout the Western United States, has recently been found in Boulder Creek.  Currently there are only two other sections of rivers in Colorado that have Mud Snail invasion.

I’d like you to discuss, based on our brief research period, which aspects of this issue are most compelling.  In other words, if you were talking to a stranger, a friend or a family member, which pieces of information would you use to get them interested and impassioned in the problem of the Mud Snail?  Think of which information you found to be unique and interesting; do you think other people would find those facts interesting?  Be sure to identify which information you think is most compelling and provide reasoning as to why it is.
