CAP students are expected to broaden their outdoor knowledge and skill base by tapping into the rich educational resources in their community. In order to accomplish this goal, students will take advantage of the outdoor skills clinics, workshops, and slide shows offered by outdoor retail stores in the Colorado Front Range. Below are some of the hot events going in the community this week:
Wednesday, April 28, 2004 – Introduction to Climbing and Belaying. Join the professionals at The Spot Bouldering Gym for a hands on evening of belaying and climbing. We’ll cover knots, harnesses, belay skills, climbing commands and get a chance to climb on top rope. The Spot, Boulder, 7:00pm, $10.00
Wednesday, April 28, 2004 – Traveling Light. You’ll learn about baggage, clothing, personal-care items, footwear, and travel accessories that will help make your travel more pleasant. REI, Boulder, 7:00pm, Free!
Wednesday, April 28, 2004 – Triathalon Basics for Women. Gale Bernhardt – Triathlon Team Coach for the 2004 Olympic Games will discuss what it takes to successfully complete a sprint or Olympic distance triathlon and highlight the excitement of the one of North America’s fastest growing sports. She will discuss her experiences coaching and preparing for the first triathlon. Gale will be available for your questions and for book signings following the presentation. Outdoor Divas, Boulder, 7:00pm, Free!
Wednesday, April 28, 2004 – Touching the Void. In Touching The Void, filmmaker Kevin Macdonald tells the story of two adventurous young mountaineers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates who set off to climb the treacherous west face of the Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. The film uses contemporary interviews with the two men, and a reenactment of their climb and descent. Boulder Theater, Boulder, 7:00pm and 9:30pm, $6.00.
Thursday, April 29, 2004 – Splitters. An ALPINE ROCKUMENTARY featuring rock climbing in Pakistan, Patagonia, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories with Jonny Copp, Mike Pennings, Josh Wharton, Brooke Andrews, Dylan Taylor and Timmy O’Neill. Take a ride into the most remote and steep mountain ranges on the planet to scale uncharted walls, spires and peaks. This film, shot over the course of three years, brings to life the fabled mountains that we, as climbers, spend our lives trying to grasp. Climb to the summits of Shipton Spire, the Lotus Flower Tower, Cerro Poincenot, and other soaring massifs with a crew of climbers who thrive on the idea that “less (gear and equipment) is more”. Boulder Theater, Boulder 7:30pm, $12.00 in advance or $15.00 at the door.

Building upon the great work we accomplished last week towards our Action Project, we continued with the process on Tuesday by generating a task list we need to complete in order to coordinate our project. This is inherently a student directed project, so the students are in charge of choosing the topic and coordinating all of the details.
On Wednesday, we spent the morning watching Cast Away with Tom Hanks. This was an incredible movie about the physical and mental hurdles that can be presented in a long-term survival situation. Due to the weather and a few sick students, we postponed our long hike until next Wednesday and walked over to Café Sole to process and discuss the movie. We talked about what it would be like to be in Chuck Noland’s (Tom Hanks) position, what our priorities would be if we were in his situation, how he creatively used materials tools to his advantage, and what was realistic and unrealistic about the movie. We thought about dealing with the stress, fear, and anxiety of being in a real survival situation and strategies to maintain the will to live, thrive, and survive and to maintain a positive attitude. This was a great movie and I was pleased with the discussion that followed.
On Thursday, Mike substituted for Ford and everyone spent the class going to work accomplishing the task list that we created on Tuesday. All in all, it was another very productive week!
